چکیده

Predicting the behavior of turbulent flows using large-eddy simulation requires a modeling subgrid-scale stress tensor. This tensor can be approximated mixed models, which combine dissipative nature functional models with capability structural to approximate out-of-equilibrium effects. We propose mathematical basis mix (functional) eddy-viscosity (structural) Bardina model. By taking an anisotropic minimum-dissipation (AMD) model for eddy viscosity, we obtain (single-layer) AMD–Bardina In order also physics-conforming wall-bounded flows, further develop this into two-layer approach: near-wall region is parameterized model, whereas outer computed The single-layer and are tested in channel at various Reynolds numbers, improved predictions obtained when applied comparison computations AMD alone. results particularly remarkable: both first- second-order statistics extremely well predicted even inflection mean velocity center captured. Hence, very promising simulations moderate high numbers.

Large-Eddy Simulation of Pressure Transport Below the Mixed Layer

Deep convection energizes the entire water column. Large-eddy simulation of the oceanic boundary layer system predicts turbulence in the well-mixed layer as well as turbulence-induced internal waves propagating into the underlying stratified water column of the freely convecting wintertime Labrador Sea. Of particular interest is the downward propagation of energy from the turbulent boundary lay...

Wall-layer Models for Large-eddy Simulations

■ Abstract Because the cost of large-eddy simulations (LES) of wall-bounded flows that resolve all the important eddies depends strongly on the Reynolds number, methods to bypass the wall layer are required to perform high-Reynolds-number LES at a reasonable cost. In this paper the available methodologies are reviewed, and their ranges of applicability are highlighted. Various unresolved issues...

Lag-modeling approach for dissipation terms in large eddy simulation

Here hi = uiφ − ūiφ̄ is the SGS scalar flux. Both τij and hi are not available from the resolved (LES) flow field and thus have to be modeled. A very promising approach to modeling τij and hi consists of utilization of extra LES quantities such as SGS kinetic energy (Schumann 1975; Ghosal et al. 1995) and SGS scalar variance (Jiménez et al. 2001; Chumakov & Rutland 2004, 2005). For these quantit...

Large eddy simulations of mixed layer instabilities and sampling strategies

The ocean's surface mixed layer is notoriously complex due to high spatial and temporal gradients of density and velocity fields. The surface mixed layer also exhibits sub-mesoscale instabilities which are challenging to observe due to their small scale and fast temporal evolution. Nevertheless, the small and sub-mesoscales represent the range of scale of naval operations and thus anomalous cur...

Explicit Filtering and Reconstruction Turbulence Modeling for Large-Eddy Simulation of Neutral Boundary Layer Flow

Standard turbulence closures for large-eddy simulations of atmospheric flow based on finite-difference or finite-volume codes use eddy-viscosity models and hence ignore the contribution of the resolved subfilterscale stresses. These eddy-viscosity closures are unable to produce the expected logarithmic region near the surface in neutral boundary layer flows. Here, explicit filtering and reconst...
